Laboratory

Overview

The MIT Medical Laboratory is committed to accuracy and efficiency in providing test results for its patients. Our specialties include microbiology, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, phlebotomy, and point-of-care testing.

Availability

• For patients enrolled in the MIT Traditional and MIT Choice Health Plans — Laboratory services are ordered by your primary care provider in MIT Medical.
• For employees, retirees, and dependents enrolled in an MIT health plan but with a PCP outside MIT Medical — Laboratory services are available by appointment at no out-of-pocket cost. You must:
  1. Preregister before the appointment with Patient Registration (go to the first floor of MIT Medical or call 617-253-6286) to give us your insurance information.
  2. Have your primary care provider complete a physician order form detailing what tests are to be done at MIT Medical and to whom the results should be sent. Bring the completed form to your Laboratory appointment.

Lipid Panels

For lipid panels, patients should fast for a minimum of 9 hours, taking nothing more than small amounts of water. Ask your physician about taking prescribed medications.

Appointments

Due to the extra time required, patients who need a semen analysis or therapeutic phlebotomy must call for an appointment. For other testing, you can stop by during lab hours as long as your clinician has ordered the required lab tests.

Lab Results

Most test results are available within 24-48 hours. To protect patient confidentiality, test results are reported directly to the clinician who ordered the work. Please call your doctor for the results or any questions regarding your orders.
