MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan
The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan is a comprehensive
health insurance plan administered in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). In addition to the care and services covered under
the Student Medical Plan, the Extended Plan includes:
- Outpatient services outside MIT Medical (for information about referrals
for outpatient medical or surgical services, read our referral FAQ.)
- Hospital room and board for medical and psychiatric hospitalizations, along
with use of operating room and equipment, X-rays, lab tests, drugs, and intensive
care services
- Inpatient hospital care by physicians or services outside MIT Medical
- Prenatal care and in-hospital maternity care, including room and board,
delivery room, special services, and nursery charges for the well newborn
baby
- Emergency room care ($50 copayment)
- Outpatient mental health when referred by MIT Medical's Mental Health and Counseling Service
- Surgical procedures, except cosmetic
- One annual routine eye exam at MIT Medical
- Chiropractic care
- Prescription drugs (one copayment per month depending on drug tier; see Understanding Your Pharmacy Options)
- Diagnostic lab tests
- Emergency care outside the United States

Enrollment
Students are automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the Extended Plan.
Waiving the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan
Students who have other insurance that meets Massachusetts requirements can
ask to waive mandatory enrollment in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan.
We strongly recommend, however, that you seriously consider this specially
designed plan before deciding to forgo its benefits. Our waiver FAQ will
help you understand the advantages of choosing the MIT Extended Plan.
If you still decide to waive enrollment, please follow the instructions for
the online waiver process on our waiver FAQ page. If you are unable
to use the online form, contact us at stuplan@med.mit.edu.
Waiver deadlines: For fall term, waivers must be submitted no later than September 15. For spring
term, waivers must be submitted no later than February 15. For summer term, waivers
must be submitted no later than June 15. Please note that the summer term waiving
period is only for students registered for the summer term. You must waive the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan every year.
