The health insurance requirements for international students are the same as those for students from the United States. All international students must purchase a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets Massachusetts requirements for qualified student health insurance programs. The Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services has more information about these requirements. Insurance plans based outside of the United States are not accepted.
All registered international students are automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan, a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets Massachusetts requirements. International students may waive the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan only if they are enrolled in a U.S.-based health insurance program that meets Massachusetts requirements.
The only exception to this insurance policy is for students studying in a foreign country. Students spending their full term studying in a foreign country can subscribe to an international or domestic carrier plan that will cover them in the country where they will study and live.
If you have questions or want more information, please contact MIT's International Student Office at 617-258-5483 or by email at iso-help@mit.edu.
