MIT is proud of its large and diverse international community. Undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members come to MIT from all over the world; each brings unique experiences and perspectives that combine to make MIT one of the most exciting and dynamic environments in which to live, learn, and work. At MIT Medical, we’re committed to helping our international students meet the many challenges associated with adjusting to a new country in a way that respects their values, cultures, and backgrounds.
We’ve created this guide to make it easy for you to find the MIT Medical resources and information that are most relevant to our international students.
MIT Medical, located in E23 on the MIT campus, offers care from experts trained in an extensive range of specialties. Because we also take care of staff, faculty, and retirees, we are able to offer more on-campus care options to students than other schools typically do.
All students with MIT visa sponsorship and their dependents are required by federal law to have adequate health insurance. All regular registered international students and those registered as special students taking 27 or more units are automatically enrolled in both the MIT Student Medical Plan and the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan meets the coverage requirements of the state of Massachusetts. For more information, visit the International Students page in the Student Health Plans section of the site.
If you or a family member needs translation services, please tell us when you make an appointment. With advance notice, we can usually arrange for foreign language or sign language interpreters at our Cambridge and Lexington centers. Some of our physicians and nurse practitioners speak other languages, and all have access to the Language Line telephone translation service.
Adjusting to a new culture can be a challenge. Community Wellness at MIT Medical has resources to help you manage stress and live a healthy life at MIT. Our MIT spouses&partners support network is designed to help families from all over the world connect with each other and get the information and referrals they need. The group is sponsored and coordinated by members of the MIT Medical staff.
