The following classes are offered in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with knowledgeable instructors. Classes are kept small and suitable for all levels of experience. Daytime and after work class schedules make it easy to commit to adding wellness into a busy day. To register, dowload and complete the registration form.

Chi Workout (30 minutes)

MIT Medical/Cambridge
Tuesdays, 12:45-1:15pm

Chi Workout™ is a light aerobic fitness class that gently encourages the development of better strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Using basic Chinese martial arts techniques and breathing methods set at a slow pace, class participants develop good form and burn calories without overly stressing the cardio vascular system, joints or musculature. Chi Workout™ is designed by Dorri Li and Zeljko Freiberger MD. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. Led by Dorri Li.

Gentle Yoga

This class utilizes a gentle approach to yoga, incorporating breathing and relaxation exercises, traditional yoga postures, therapeutic stretching, and an emphasis on proper body alignment. This class is sure to soothe your aching back, shoulders, and mind. Beginners welcome. Mats provided, wear comfortable clothing. Led by Hadassah Segal.

Hula Hooping for Fitness

Hoopdance is an emerging movement form that is both fun and challenging.  Hoopdance or “hooping” involves the use of custom, adult-sized hoops that are easier to use than our childhood hula hoops. Hoopdance can be a great way to build core strength, tone the whole body, increase cardiovascular health, develop balance and coordination, and increase flexibility. Regular practice can also lead to a reduction in stress, improved self-confidence, and a greater capacity for self-expression. Get ready to laugh, sweat, and just plain enjoy yourself! Hoops will be provided. Led by Lauren Mayhew.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)utilizes the techniques of meditation and yoga to teach the practice of mindfulness, which is about learning to relax into the present moment with a non-judging and friendly awareness. Mindfulness is cultivated by paying attention, on purpose and carefully, to the contents of this moment in an open and allowing manner. Participants will practice awareness through gentle movement, meditation, and mindful eating. Mindfulness practices can help improve focus and concentration; reduce stress, anxiety and depression; and produce more positive emotional states. Led by Lauren Mayhew.

Moderate Flow Yoga

This class series will focus on the yoking (as in yug, the Sanskrit root of the word Yoga) the relationship between breath and movement that is core to Vinyasa yoga forms. We will flow through pose sequences spontaneously as class energies/participants evoke them. We will move into Sun Salutes and tangential variations after everyone is familiar with basic forms. This class requires a moderate level of fitness. Modifications will be offered for different levels. Led by Portia Brockway.

New Moms Group

MIT Medical is offering a new six-week group for mothers with babies who are two to six weeks old starting in September. Moms will find support, information, and discussion on topics including soothing babies with fussiness and gas; help with crying, sleeping, and feeding; returning to work or school; normal newborn behavior and developmental changes; and establishing a routine. Each session will also feature infant massage, songs, finger plays, and lullabies. Led by Wendy Mackey-Kidd, an experienced new-parent group leader, childbirth educator, doula and mom, with a master’s degree in health education. Bring your baby and join the fun!

Pilates

MIT Medical/Cambridge

The goal of Pilates (based on the work of Joseph Pilates) is to strengthen and lengthen the body. The focus of the work is on the core muscles of the body, namely the abdomen and back. Pilates is a mind/body discipline that also emphasizes breath, mindful awareness, and healthy posture and alignment. This is a beginner level mat class; all interested are welcome to attend. Led by Hadassah Segal.

Prenatal Yoga

Level: Gentle to moderate
This class prepares your body for childbirth with movement in gentle to moderate postures (asanas) that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles, breathing techniques for focus, and meditation to connect with one’s inner self and center of intuition.

Prenatal Partner Yoga Workshop

MIT Medical/Cambridge
Thursday, 6:15-8:15 p.m.

1 session, $100 per couple for everyone

This workshop helps to prepare the woman with child and her labor partner for confident passage through labor and childbirth. It begins with synchronized breathing and trust-building partner yoga that's appropriate for women up to term. It continues with instruction in labor assists, special breathing techniques, massage, useful shiatsu points, and a special "baby's birth trip" visualization. Come prepared for an experiential workshop based on communication through breath and touch. Led by Portia Brockway.

Slow Vinyasa Yoga

This all-levels class, influenced by elemental yoga, takes care of the mind as well as the body. Vinyasa is translated as "flow" and awakens core support and calming breath. As we flow from pose to pose, yoga props (blocks, blankets, and straps) are provided to create mindful alignment, and each pose is adapted to each unique student. Led by Zan Barry.

Work In Fitness (co-ed)

Work In Fitness is an exercise conditioning class that helps improve overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance while fortifying specific areas that are challenged by long hours of sitting in a passive work environment: neck, shoulders, abdominals, lower back, hamstrings and hip flexors. Class incorporates Chinese Kung Fu and Chi K'ung exercises supplemented with upper body strength training and mat work for core conditioning. Work In Fitness is a Dorri Li Fitness Signature Workout. Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Weights and floor mats provided. Led by Dorri Li.

Like Work In Fitness, Work In Fitness for Women is an exercise conditioning class that helps improve overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance while fortifying specific areas that are challenged by long hours of sitting in a passive work environment: neck, shoulders, abdominals, lower back, hamstrings and hip flexors. the class incorporates Chinese Kung Fu and Chi K'ung exercises supplemented with upper body strength training, mat work for core conditioning and additional bone strengthening exercises to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Work In Fitness for Women is a Dorri Li Fitness Signature Workout. Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Weights and floor mats provided. Led by Dorri Li.

Yogalates

Yogalates joins the ancient discipline of yoga with the contemporary approach of pilates to provide an emphasis on “core” abdominal strength that is lacking in most Yoga classes. Moves stretch, strengthen and relax the whole body. Sessions will include floor “mat” sequences, standing poses, and a restorative rest at the end. Modifications will be provided for different levels. Led by Portia Brockway.
